The Buddhist revival in post-Mao China [electronic resource] : women reconstruct Buddhism on Mt. Emei /
Abstract (Summary)
In the current revival of Buddhism in China, a new generation of nuns is emerging as leaders of female monastic communities supported by lay devotees. This dissertation investigates the rise of female monastic movement in the post-Mao context through studying a community of nuns and lay women based at the nunnery Fuhu Si on the sacred mountain Emei Shan in the southwest. My study of Fuhu Si was conducted between 1997 and 1998 with anthropological field research methods, including participant-observation, interviews and textual analysis.
