ARCHITECTURE IN THE DIGITAL AGE: COMMUNITY SPACE IN SMALL TOWN AMERICA

by PUGH, JILL K

Abstract (Summary)
Advancing computer-based technologies allows us to accurately explore the complexities of contemporary life in a process-driven approach. Recent advances of the Digital Techniques within architecture have lead to a proliferation of mediocre architecture. This thesis asks how we can use these advances in Technology and to create more responsible and meaningful public spaces, acting as a catalyst for cultural change. Architecture is no longer in an age of newness, we are now in an age of refinement. Elegance is a rather novel idea in architecture, observed as the refinement of digital constructs to instill cultural relevance. The role of the Architect is to negotiate and manage complex and layered systems, orchestrating a legible composition. Technology is not used only as a method, but also as a subject, in an attempt to counter declining of Rust-Belt areas with the promise of a new industry that offers a more promising future.
