Abstract (Summary)
This paper is a diachronic comparison of the evolution of the use of the copulative verbs ser and estar in Spanish and in Catalan. Beginning in the thirteenth century and continuing until the twentieth century this study tracks the tendency toward a greater use of estar in both languages in order to determine whether such a tendency is a recent phenomenon or whether, in fact, it has its roots in the medieval languages. In addition, a possible relationship between the use of ser and estar with locative expressions and the locative adverbial pronoun hi/ is examined whereby the retention of such a pronoun in Catalan tends to halt the move towards a greater use estar, while the loss of the same pronoun allows for tendency toward a greater use of estar in locative expressions in Spanish.
